For example a Nosferatu that isn't directly related may adopt the characteristics of the Burakamin if their blood potency is great enough. Rather than just being a lineage it becomes a sort of physical and metaphysical methodology which may be adopted if a character is from the appropriate clan. To elaborate on Rose's post, the bloodline concept in Requiem is slightly different from the old World of Darkness. I personally prefer it over Masquerade, but people who are heavily invested in the older game often do not. Requiem is that different from Masquerade. First and foremost I have to say that you would be much better off thinking of them as two separate and distinct games about vampires that just happen to share some of the same names and use similar dice mechanics.
